The European Commission recently welcomed the political agreement between the European Parliament and the Council on its proposal dated December 14th, 2021, as regards the revision of the Directive 2010/40/EU, also known as the Intelligent Transport Systems (“ITS”) Directive.

Even though the initial revision proposal was focused on the emergence of new road mobility options, mobility apps and connected and automated mobility, it seems that the revision’s scope has been agreed to become more extensive, so as to:

🔹 cover emerging services (multimodal information, booking and ticketing services), communication between vehicles and infrastructure and automated mobility.

🔹 establish targets as regards the digitization of crucial information and delivery of essential services.

🔹  facilitate the deployment of Cooperative ITS, allowing vehicles and road infrastructure to communicate with one another.

The political agreement between the European Parliament and the Council remains to be formally adopted. Upon the completion of this procedure, the revised framework on Intelligent Transport Systems will be published and entered into force.
