Lifting of short sales ban by the HCMC

On 18 May 2020, the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (“HCMC”) announced the lifting of the ban of short sales and of transactions other than short sales which create or increase the net short positions in shares admitted to trading on the regulated market of the Athens Exchange. Such ban had been imposed in response to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic back in March 2020. Having regard to the current market conditions, HCMC considers that there is no need for further extension. On a national capital markets level, such a decision is a sign of re-setting to normality as Greece is now gradually re-opening the economic sectors and social activities locked down due to the pandemic.
